LUMIÈRE CHALLENGE 2025

The second Lumière Challenge, hosted by Out of Frame (OOF) and The People’s Picturehouse Cork (PPH), in collaboration with Deep Red Productions, is a unique filmmaking competition designed to celebrate the artistry of early cinema and empower emerging filmmakers. This initiative aims to foster creativity, promote accessibility, and create meaningful opportunities for filmmakers to advance their craft through a carefully curated challenge with a significant prize.

Challenge Rules

Participants must adhere to the following principles of Lumière filmmaking:

  • Length: Films must be exactly one minute long.

  • Silent: No diegetic sound is permitted; the story must be conveyed purely through visuals. You may add music - however, when it's screened on the night it will be accompanied by a live pianist.

  • Stationary Camera: The camera must remain fixed, with no pans, tilts, or zooms.

  • Continuous Shot: The film must be a single, unbroken take, with no cuts or post-production effects.

  • Theme of the film: Chaos Theory.

The winning film will be awarded:

  • €300 cash grant for the winner’s next short film development.

  • Full production support from Deep Red Productions for the winning filmmaker’s next project.

There will also be two additional awards on the night:

  • Spirit of the Challenge Award - decided among the committee.

  • Audience Award - decided by the audience via online vote.

Submission Deadline: Films must be submitted by 6 PM, Sunday 23rd February 2025.
